“Pilk’s ‘Ivan’“- recorded at the Once Lounge, Somerville, MA, Feb. 2 (Groundhog Day), 2018, by Fred Boak. Pilk is our trombonist, Bob Pilkington, and his was one of the first “Ivan” re-arrangements, and still one of the best; particularly fine work from our percussion section, Jerome Deupree (on some kind of crazy little multi-tone bell cymbal he’s got that I love) and Alex Brander; Cliff Spencer making mellotron-ish noises on the keys; and even a rare cameo from Keiichi Hashimoto, who was nice enough to come by that night. I love when the whole thing gets dreamy about halfway through, an unexpected (and entirely delightful!) development…
