“Bocce & Bourbon” is, on the one hand, a compilation of 19 examples of Chandler’s best work with his favorite lyricist, David Greenberger (also of Men and Volts and Duplex Planet fame), that spans more than three decades and includes both the Chandler Travis Philharmonic and Three-O as well as the Catbirds and the Incredible Casuals; but about half of it (nine new songs, plus a re-imagined alternate version) is brand new. The lyrics share compassion, warmth, and inventive imagery, echoed in music that is gently but firmly idiosyncratic, and the whole is surprisingly coherent -hard to catagorize, perhaps, but not hard to get.

We’re very proud of this collection, and the CTP and 3 both plan on touring and spreading the word as extensively as possible for rest of 2015.

Sample song: “The Strongman of North America”

They needed really short pieces, and this one was a little too long and probably too vague to make the cut.

When I’m titling fragments, I’m always trying to just give myself a hint as to the character of the thing, in case I end up looking through the archives later for something in particular; so with “strong poppy” I was just trying to be literal, and imply that it was something very pop but with some potential element of balls. It’s pretty germinal -no words, just da-das -but I still hope it becomes a song someday (and I hope any potential lyricist out there will take this as an open invitation, bearing in mind that Davey Baby Greenberger always has dibs, and that I’m an opinionated and meddlesome old prick when it comes to lyrics.)

Well, what can I say? Brilliant. Note how similarly misanthropic this is lyrically to the xmas song of mine we posted last week, “Another Sweaty Christmas“, tho much better titled -both Scrooge-like, but counter-balanced by chipper little melodies… great minds, thinking alike, just like in the old days!

Many videos were shot (in fact, here’s one now, shot by Ron Daniels; this group is clearly more photogenic than most (thank you, Eltones: Sarah Swain, Catie Flynn, Jodi Birchall, Jen Budryk, and (perhaps most strikingly), Fred Boak.

Either of these could turn up at the Cavalcade shows this week, tho you’ll probably only hear Steve’s, which is called “This is No Time For Fun (This Is Christmas)”, at the Cape Cavalcade.

Also must confess to a couple writing fouls here, even apart from the dreadful title: I believe I’ve used both the word “sterile” and the phrase “smelly reindeer” before in some other xmas song, but can’t remember which one; clearly, this puts me well over quota in both regards.

Been saving this one up for you…some may find it a tad objectionable… in fact, all may. Even I do, which, is why we’ve only played it twice.

The narrative concerns an unlucky musician (we’ll call him “Jim”) who runs into an unexpected and particularly heinous digestive problem at a fancy wedding where his band is getting paid a good deal more than usual and is thus more anxious than ever to make a good impression. Includes some fine saxophoning by the right Reverend Earl Speedway (aka Berke McKelvey.)

hot off the presses, just wrote it night before last, this is the third time we played it, plus a couple baritone guitar and vocal overdubs (because you couldn’t hear the vox or bari much much on the original, plus trying out a couple ideas); so new, I don’t know if it’s any good yet or not (they’re all so cute when they’re babies!), but I think I kinda like it… you tell me…

My old friend Christopher Walsh, who years ago wrote a delightful review of the Philharmonic for the Republic of Letters (of all places), recently wrote a book called “Cowardice: A Brief History”. But would he stop there? No!! He also sent me this lyric, which I changed very little, and we ended up with this song. Don’t know if it’s done yet; might be, or I may end up recording it from scratch someday, but I’m usually kind of reluctant to do things more than once, and semi-allergic to polishing and perfecting. So here you go.

The book, like everything else in life, is available on Amazon (here); unless I miss my guess, Chris will get more of the money if you buy it anywhere else, like here for instance (unfortunately, the latter here costs more, too. Your move!)

And here are some blurbs (on the book, not the song!):

“With impressive insight and sensitivity, Chris Walsh holds up for careful examination one of war’s last remaining taboos. That Cowardice simultaneously illuminates and discomfits is a mark of its success.”—Andrew J. Bacevich, author of The Limits of Power and Breach of Trust

“We think we know the face of courage, but do we dare look into the face of fear? In Cowardice, Chris Walsh leads us on a journey from Dante’s Inferno to Joseph Heller’s Catch-22, with wide-ranging stops in between to examine this most taboo of emotions in life and literature. Sifting evidence from many disciplines, as well as accounts of desertions, derelictions, and courts-martial from more than three centuries, Walsh offers a nuanced and humane portrait of the feeling that may remind us most—and most uncomfortably—of our humanity.”—Megan Marshall, Pulitzer Prize-winning author of Margaret Fuller: A New American Life

“Thoughtful, penetrating, erudite, and gracefully written, Chris Walsh’s analysis of cowardice sheds new light on an ancient and momentous human obsession.”—Steven Pinker, author of How the Mind Works and The Better Angels of Our Nature

“There is a tough argument at the heart of this brilliant little book, but what will keep readers turning the pages is Walsh’s astonishing resourcefulness as a reader (there is a surprise on almost every page) and the wisdom and lucidity of his style. Unexpected, unnerving in a way, yet wonderful.”—Jack Miles, Pulitzer Prize-winning author of God: A Biography
