Wedding Prayer” -the Chandler Travis Three-O -recorded at the Dreamaway Lodge in Becket, MA by Anton “Fred” Jodsworth T. Boak aka The Valet.

Been saving this one up for you…some may find it a tad objectionable… in fact, all may. Even I do, which, is why we’ve only played it twice.

The narrative concerns an unlucky musician (we’ll call him “Jim”) who runs into an unexpected and particularly heinous digestive problem at a fancy wedding where his band is getting paid a good deal more than usual and is thus more anxious than ever to make a good impression. Includes some fine saxophoning by the right Reverend Earl Speedway (aka Berke McKelvey.)

hot off the presses, just wrote it night before last, this is the third time we played it, plus a couple baritone guitar and vocal overdubs (because you couldn’t hear the vox or bari much much on the original, plus trying out a couple ideas); so new, I don’t know if it’s any good yet or not (they’re all so cute when they’re babies!), but I think I kinda like it… you tell me…

My old friend Christopher Walsh, who years ago wrote a delightful review of the Philharmonic for the Republic of Letters (of all places), recently wrote a book called “Cowardice: A Brief History”. But would he stop there? No!! He also sent me this lyric, which I changed very little, and we ended up with this song. Don’t know if it’s done yet; might be, or I may end up recording it from scratch someday, but I’m usually kind of reluctant to do things more than once, and semi-allergic to polishing and perfecting. So here you go.

The book, like everything else in life, is available on Amazon (here); unless I miss my guess, Chris will get more of the money if you buy it anywhere else, like here for instance (unfortunately, the latter here costs more, too. Your move!)

And here are some blurbs (on the book, not the song!):

“With impressive insight and sensitivity, Chris Walsh holds up for careful examination one of war’s last remaining taboos. That Cowardice simultaneously illuminates and discomfits is a mark of its success.”—Andrew J. Bacevich, author of The Limits of Power and Breach of Trust

“We think we know the face of courage, but do we dare look into the face of fear? In Cowardice, Chris Walsh leads us on a journey from Dante’s Inferno to Joseph Heller’s Catch-22, with wide-ranging stops in between to examine this most taboo of emotions in life and literature. Sifting evidence from many disciplines, as well as accounts of desertions, derelictions, and courts-martial from more than three centuries, Walsh offers a nuanced and humane portrait of the feeling that may remind us most—and most uncomfortably—of our humanity.”—Megan Marshall, Pulitzer Prize-winning author of Margaret Fuller: A New American Life

“Thoughtful, penetrating, erudite, and gracefully written, Chris Walsh’s analysis of cowardice sheds new light on an ancient and momentous human obsession.”—Steven Pinker, author of How the Mind Works and The Better Angels of Our Nature

“There is a tough argument at the heart of this brilliant little book, but what will keep readers turning the pages is Walsh’s astonishing resourcefulness as a reader (there is a surprise on almost every page) and the wisdom and lucidity of his style. Unexpected, unnerving in a way, yet wonderful.”—Jack Miles, Pulitzer Prize-winning author of God: A Biography

Always loved this old song, which I first heard on a fantastic compilation of r’n’b from the old Specialty label called “Creole Kings of New Orleans”. Our version doesn’t usually feature a solo, nor a clavinet, but Cliff Spencer supplies both in fine fashion. Sadly, not seeing much of Keiichi and Rikki lately, but they both play great here…

More hi-jinx from that same night at the Beachcomber, one of our first gigs w Sam (aka Slammy) Wood plus (then-special guest but now full-time member) Sal Baglio, first with a cover of a great old tune called “Do the Shake” that Steve and Sam have played for years in the Greenheads (it was recorded in 1965 by a Finnish group called the Renegades, but I’m not sure if they originated it or not -if anyone has any further info, love to hear more), followed by another song the Greenheads originated, a Steve Wood original called “Stoned” (the studio recording of which is on the first Catbirds release, “Viborate“, and their full-length CD, “Catbirds Say Yeah“)

This one is a cover of an old Tommy Bell song that Steve Wood, who sings it, did with the Greenheads for years before bringing it over to the Catbirds. Been hitting a great groove on this one lately w. upstart drummist Sam Wood; Rikki always played the shit out of it, too (for proof, there’s a nice video somewhere up on youtube of us playing it at the Lizard Lounge); it’s also one of a heaping handful of “Catbirds Say Yeah” outtakes that we look forward to releasing eventually.

This is one of the songs we play most live, and is pretty much a guaranteed good time (in the sense that anything involving the Philharmonette can be thought of as “guaranteed”.) Nice percussion from Ken Field (aka Hoot Fieldling), who made himself absolutely indispensable in August when we lost Berke for a few weeks due to the demands of his theatrical schedule, for which I’m extremely grateful… don’t know what he’s doing in addition to the shaker part, but I hope he remembers to do it again.

This is a spirited, silly performance of a foolish song that I hope might be fun if you’re already in a good mood; if you’re not, you might wanna wait…

Boak (aka the Valet) – this is our longest running current residency, and we just love it, and are so happy to be held over this September, what a blast! One of the reasons we love Bubala’s is that the food is just ridiculously good; also, it’s a perfect place to experiment, as exemplified to some extent by these selections.

The GGs (l-r: Vanessa Rose, Edwige Yingling, Sophie Yingling)

The GGs (l-r: Vanessa Rose, Edwige Yingling, Sophie Yingling)

I’ve always wanted to be involved in a girl group, but it’s always been a bit tricky, seeing as I’m not a girl. Luckily, this summer, Edwige and Sophie Yingling (daughters of John Yingling, our patron saint at Bubala’s), along with Vanessa Rose (from our favorite Truro eatery, Terra Luna), were gracious enough to make my dream come true a couple weeks ago with this rendition of the Dixie Cups’ “Gee, the Moon Is Shining Bright.” (The premise behind the GGs so far is that they only do songs that include the word “gee” -their other songs so far being Joe & Ann’s “Gee Baby” and another Dixie Cups classic, “Gee Baby Gee.”

Then, for good measure, Vanessa sealed the deal by dueting with me on Ann & Joe’s “Can’t Help It If I Love You So“, another song I’ve always loved and which she’s been nailing all summer -sure hated to lose her when she had to go back to Brooklyn on Labor Day…

Another one we got to cover this year was “When I Grow Too Old To Dream“, a title I’d always loved, but I’d never heard a version of the song that moved me much until my fake son, Joseph “Fakey” O’Sullivan, asked the CTP to learn the Arnett Cobb version to play at his wedding last weekend, and lo and behold, it was both swinging and gorgeous, and I know we’ll be returning to it frequently. What a gas -thanks and congratulations, Fakey n’ Janet!

And special thanks to our gracious benefactor John Yingling, who let us play whether anyone came or not -glad that’s finally paying off a little! -and whose version of “Peach Picking Time In Georgia” will no doubt be along soon on SOTW!
